Understanding Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET)

Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) is an intervention and counseling approach addresses underlying motivations in regards to recovery and is specifically designed to evoke internally motivated change.

Five Critical Components of MET

These five strategies are designed to encourage feelings of motivational change in those suffering from substance abuse disorders:

Discerning Reality

Resistance to treatment is often rooted in the illusion of client-health. Those who are abusing substances must come to terms with the fact that there is a gap between where they think they are and where they actually are.

Developing Empathy

Clients are encouraged to consider their addictions in relationship to others in order to develop empathy in regards to how their actions affect others. Learning to consider others can be used as a motivating factor in recovery.

Avoiding Arguments

Since MET is based on self-discovery and self-motivation, therapists avoid engaging in arguments with their clients concerning the degree of their substance abuse. A positive outlook about MET is always encouraged.

Accepting Resistance

MET helps those who are abusing substances work through their resistance to treatment. Therapists engage their clients on a personal level to help them realize how their behaviors are impacting their goals.

Supporting Self-Efficacy

Clients must believe in their own ability to achieve their recovery goals. MET maintains and affirms any individual’s ability to overcome addiction. Our therapists encourage positive thinking and behaviors that reinforce self-efficacy.
