New Year, New Focus

2020 wasn’t an easy year. We spent so much time worrying about our physical health, our children’s education, the logistics of working remotely, and surviving a tumultuous political landscape. With the whirlwind and worry, it’s no wonder mental health took a backseat for so many Americans.

But a new year is approaching. While many of those old challenges may persist and new ones are bound to pop up, a resolution to make your mental health a priority may save you from so much stress and uncertainty.

Here a few tips for focusing on your mental wellbeing in the new year.

Look after yourself

Care for yourself as you would care for someone you love. Give your body the nourishment, hydration, sleep, and exercise it needs to keep you happy and healthy. Give your mind time to process tough emotions, focus on positive moments, and bounce back from the day-to-day grind. Have patience with yourself and be reminded each day of your worth in this world.

If you give special care to your body and mind, your mental and physical wellness will improve.

Build meaningful relationships

The biggest loss of 2020 was human connection. This year, make relationships a priority. Whether it’s a weekly Zoom chat, a regular phone call, or a “How’s it going?” text every few days, make other people a priority in 2021.

Feeling connected to others will bring a sense of fulfillment and support that are invaluable to your mental wellbeing and resilience.

Give your mind a workout

Mindfulness techniques can help you learn to quiet your mind and stay present in the moment. Try one of the following activities to relieve stress and bring a sense of purpose back into your day-to-day:

Take a timeout

Rest is a vital part of mental well-being. Whether it’s a block of time each day for “me” time or the occasional day off, make relaxing and resetting a priority. Put down the to-do list, switch your phone to silent, and do something that fills you with joy.

It can be easy to feel guilty or anxious about what’s piling up while you’re away, but let those thoughts come and go as you remind yourself how much more resilient and refreshed you’ll be after a bit of rest.

Seek help when you need it

It’s important to know that professionals are here to help if you’re not feeling mentally well.
